Well summer is over and fall is kind of in the air here on the Space coast. We might not have the changing of the leaves like the northern states to show that fall is here but we have something even more exciting-THE BAIT RUN-. This event happens every season as the weather starts to cool off to the north sending an annual migration of finger mullet on it's southerly routes to warmer waters. The lagoon fills with glass minnows and finger mullet and the preditor fish go on a feeding frenzy. This time of year is by far my personal favorite time for throwing top water lures for amazing surface strikes. The outer grass flats can produce trout, red fish, blue fish, small sharks, mangrove snapper, jack cravelle. The schools of jacks can be seen moving along the edges of these flats from miles away. Setting your boat in their path will for sure make for a three ring circus of drag screeming fun.
Fishing along the many mangrove shore lines will get it's fair share of action for a snook bite as well. This migration of bait will last only as long as the weather stays warm as when we do start getting the colder temperatures the bait will be pushed south and won't be seen until May. |
